Steve Ibbotson FRAS

ASTROSPHERE is presented by Steve Ibbotson, an amateur astronomer for over 30 years. His initial interest in astronomy was sparked by the Apollo Moon Missions, which since then has developed into his business. Steve is still an avid skywatcher observing on any clear evening..

In recent years this has involved helping to set up Star Centre based at Sheffield Hallam University as a founder member. The Centres primary aim is to enable the public to share Steves passion of observational astronomy by using large telescopes and other hands on projects. This enables Steve to pass on information and advice about equipment and techniques. He is accomplished at presenting talks on various astronomical subjects to many and varied audiences including London's Science Museum. The University of Manchester Institute of Technology (UMIST), to UKSEDS, and many Schools and colleges around the country.

Through the years Steve has collected various telescopes and observational equipment now enabling him to try his hand at CCD imaging while also carrying on photographing the heavens with normal camera equipment.

Above is a recent image of a large sunspot group on the surface of our nearest star, the largest to appear for over 10 years.

This image was taken at the end of March 2001

The image of the moon was also taken early in April 2001 showing ancient lava fields (mare) and impact craters.

The best time to look at the moon using either binoculars or a telescope is not at full moon. While the moon is showing a phase the contrast is better, showing the craters at their best.
